This tool is widely available for free on the internet (both downloadable templates and interactive exercises) and is included in many coaching books and training courses.

The wheel can be revisited to measure progress towards goals and identify new areas for attention. Be honest and realistic with yourself you can use your intuition, emotions, or facts to guide you. It is then easier to identify one area in which to focus the coaching conversation in order to make changes and set worthwhile goals. Then rate your level of satisfaction in each segment on a scale of 1 to 10. Each area is then given a score out of 10 and these scores provide a quick way of comparing how successfully each area is working. There are normally 8 areas in the wheel, with labels such as recreation, career, money, health, relationships and so on. The client can choose the labels according to the coaching context. It helps the client to identify if they are placing too much emphasis on one area of their life and neglecting others. It works by breaking down the general idea of ‘life’ or ‘work’ into smaller components where it is easier to take action. The wheel of life is easily adapted for any coaching situation, including working with children and teenagers. It is widely used in life coaching, often at the start of a coaching relationship, as the activity is helpful in determining the most useful or impactful areas for goal setting and change.
